BRERC holds extensive ecological and geological data for the ’West of England’ area. We store, manage, analyse and map this information using Database tools, GIS software (Geographic Information System) and Aerial photos.

To ensure the quality of our data, we have standard procedures to Validate and Verify species data before it is made available for distribution.

BRERC Main Data Holdings

  • Species Data
    • Protected and Notable Species
      Records of notable, legally protected and BAP species: includes all species with a local, regional, national or international designation.
      BRERC Notable Species list (updated 1999) is available on request.
    • Non-Notable Species
      Records of species that have no protection or legal status.
    • Invasive Species
      Data on Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Balsam, Giant Hogweed, Signal Crayfish, etc.

  • Habitat Information
    • UK BAP Priority Habitat
      Priority Habitat survey data;includes data from Living Landscapes surveys.
    • Phase 1 Habitat
      Phase 1 survey data covering the BRERC area, which indicates the predominant habitat type for each land parcel.
    • Hedgerow Survey Data
      Maps of Hedgerow surveys, primarily in Bath & North-East Somerset (B&NES) and South Gloucestershire.
    • Pond Survey Data
    • Veteran Tree Survey Data
    • Water Vole Watercourse Survey Data
    • Inventory of Ancient Woodland sites
      Maps of the location and extent of Ancient Semi-natural Woodland (Information derived from Natural England).
    • Strategic Nature Areas (SNAs)
      The South West Nature Map for the BRERC area (showing the best areas to maintain and expand terrestrial wildlife habitats at a landscape scale).

  • Information on Non-Statutory Sites
    • Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI) / Wildlife Sites in North Somerset
      Boundaries, habitat data, etc for these sites.
    • Regionally Important Geological/geomorphological Sites (RIGS)
      Boundaries, geological data, etc for both Designated and Non-designated sites.
    • Bristol Wildlife Network Sites (Bristol City Council area only)
      Primarily areas of green space and natural habitat that link one or more SNCIs.
      Boundaries, habitat data, etc for these sites.
    • Avon Wildlife Trust Reserves
      Wildlife Trust reserve boundaries, habitat data, etc.

  • Information on Statutory Sites
    We can also provide boundaries of the following Statutory Sites
    • Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI): we include species information from the SSSI citation sheet
    • Special Areas of Conservation (SAC)
    • Local Nature Reserves (LNRs)
    • RAMSAR Sites
    • Special Protection Areas (SPAs)
    • National Nature Reserves (NNRs)

  • Geological Data at BRERC
    BRERC holds the Avon RIGS Group geological and geomorphological records for over 1000 surveyed sites - in addition to the 300+ RIGS sites in the area.

    BRERC is also a repository for historic environmental data for the area, with records from the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
