We are pleased to be able to present the users of our website with the opportunity of viewing distribution maps for certain species via a well known program called Google Earth.
It has been our aim for some time to make some of our data available in an electronic format for download from our website. However, practical difficulties with the technical aspects have prevented us from doing this – until now.
Google Earth, in the company's own words, 'combines satellite imagery, maps and the power of Google Search to put the world's geographic information at your fingertips'. It is a free download from http://earth.google.com. Using it you can pan, tilt, zoom right in and fly-by anywhere on the planet.
You will need to have Google Earth installed on your computer in order to view these distribution maps.
Assuming you have downloaded and installed Google Earth, viewing our distribution maps is easy. Simply right click on one of the links below and 'save target as...' to save it onto your hard drive.
Then simply double click the saved file. Google Earth will automatically start and zoom in to show the Bristol Region along with all the records for the species you selected. Hover above the 'pin tack' symbol and double click and you'll see further information about that record.
We would like your views on these distribution maps; what you think of them, if they are accessible, how you feel we might improve them and which other species you might like to see. Please e-mail us via our contacts page.
Right Click and 'Save Target As...' to download (Right Click and 'Save Link as...' in Mozilla Firefox)
